The Colorado Link Project- Ongoing
This study works toward developing sustainable efforts at data collection assessing the prevalence of animal abuse in Colorado. The collaboration defines existing practices and describes how current animal abuse issues are addressed from initial report to final disposition. Ongoing aspects of the project focus on development of discipline specific toolkits and curriculum to assist in the effective management of animal abuse in Colorado.
Canine Healers- Active
This study is examining the impact of a specialized trauma informed canine therapy intervention program at a residential treatment program for girls. Excelsior is a Metro Denver-based treatment center for youth. Canine Healers is a group trauma therapy that incorporates therapy dogs as complementary support. Trauma protocol manualized in 2015 by GSSW students. RCT study design approved by DU IRB and 1 round of data collection completed. Study on hold pending organizational changes at Excelsior.
IRISE- Active
Awarded by the University of Denver’s The Interdisciplinary Research Incubator for the Study of (In)Equality. The study, Cultural restoration, humane education and addressing free roaming dog populations on Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota. The study utilizes a One Health approach to investigate the intersections between traditional and contemporary local attitudes and knowledge of dogs and other animals; the ideal intervention location, age and content of a humane education program; and the size of the dog population, its health impacts and current and needed resources to address the problem.

The Green Chimneys Study - In Development
The broad hypothesis for this research agenda is that Green Care concepts implemented by Green Chimneys impact its students’ academic and behavioral performance through Positive Youth Development (PYD) measures. (GC) is a special education school for children with severe psychosocial issues that incorporates animal- and horticulture-based interventions throughout its programming. GC and IHAC have partnered to research the impacts of the nature-based interventions on the clinical outcomes of the students. Positive youth development (PYD) is being used as the framework for documenting and researching the interventions. A collaboration was established with PYD researchers at Tufts University (Megan Mueller and Richard Lerner). GSSW students conducting field research to document programs.
Evaluating Sustainability Educational and Vocational Programs in Prisons Washington State This study is entitled: Measuring the Mechanisms and Outcomes of Endangered Species Programs on Offenders and Staff. The study will examine Potential mechanisms of influence of animal and horticultural education and vocational programs on pro-social behavior for offenders and job satisfaction for prison staff increased empathy and self-efficacy and decreased anxiety.
Washington State Prison Dog Programs(WADOC) has dog-training programs in all 10 of its prison facilities. A study is being conducted to measure in-prison outcomes (infraction rates) for inmates participating in these programs compared to inmates who do not. A package of validated self-report instruments that measure empathy, self-efficacy and anxiety will be used to attempt to identify the mechanisms behind any differences in outcomes. DU IRB and WADOC Research Committee approval granted June 2016. Data collection in WA targeted for August 2016.
Pets for Life- Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the largest and most influential animal welfare organization in the US. IHAC is studying the impacts of their Pets for Life programs on pets and their owners in 39 lower socioeconomic communities across the US. In another study, the drivers behind pet restrictions in rental properties are being studied for HSUS’ Pets Are Welcome program.
